It's a Quam

This animal alphabet     makes interesting choices,
but poses some puzzlers     for the preschool set.
Sure A is an alligator,     and zebra's for Z,
but narwhal for N     and urchin for U are just odd,
and quahog for Q,     more quirky than cute;
I quiz my kid     and he comes up with "quam"!

No jumbo-jet,     this puddle jumper;
I figured 12A'd     be just aft of first class,
rather this row's     the last 'cept for the lavatory!
